VSL, medical taxi, seated patient transport: what are we talking about?

When people look for a VSL, a medical taxi or a "medicalised" taxi in Narbonne, they almost always mean the same thing: seated transport to your care, covered by French health insurance. On your prescription it is called "professional seated transport": it can be provided by a VSL or a CPAM-approved taxi, with the same cover rules.

A CPAM-approved taxi is not an ambulance: it has no stretcher and no medical equipment. If your condition requires travelling lying down or under supervision, your doctor prescribes an ambulance. For patients who can travel seated, the approved medical taxi is the most common solution.

The "bon de transport" is the medical transport prescription your doctor writes before the trip, except in emergencies. Show it to the driver with your Carte Vitale: with direct billing, when you are entitled to it, you do not pay upfront the part covered by health insurance.

Action 11 Taxi provides this seated medical transport from Narbonne, 24/7. Book your medical taxi by phone or WhatsApp on 06 03 15 55 51, the day before if possible for a morning appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Medical taxi in Narbonne: your questions

What is a "taxi VSL"?

It is the name many patients give to the CPAM-approved taxi: a taxi approved by French health insurance for seated medical transport. A VSL strictly speaking belongs to an ambulance company, but the cover is the same.

What is a "medicalised taxi"?

The expression usually means the CPAM-approved taxi that drives patients to their care. It carries no medical equipment: if you must travel lying down or under supervision, you need an ambulance.

What is the transport prescription ("bon de transport")?

It is the medical transport prescription written by your doctor. It states the mode of transport: ambulance, or seated transport by VSL or CPAM-approved taxi. Keep it to show the driver.

Do I have to pay upfront?

With direct billing (tiers payant), when you are entitled to it, you do not pay upfront the part covered by health insurance; your top-up insurance may cover the rest. A medical deductible may remain payable, unless you are exempt.

What is the difference between a VSL and an approved taxi?

A VSL (light medical vehicle) belongs to an ambulance company, an approved taxi to a taxi company approved by French health insurance. Both provide seated professional transport, with the same cover rules for you.

My prescription mentions seated transport: can you take me?

Yes. A prescription for “seated professional transport” covers both the VSL and the approved taxi: as a CPAM-approved taxi, we can provide your journey.

Do I need a medical prescription?

Yes. For the journey to be covered, your doctor must issue a medical transport prescription before the trip, except in an emergency.

How much do I have to pay?

It depends on your situation: French health insurance generally reimburses 55%, and up to 100% in some cases. Your top-up insurance (mutuelle) may cover the rest. A small medical deductible (franchise) may apply, unless you are exempt.

What changed on 1 October 2026?

Since 1 October 2026 (decree of 21 August 2026), a non-exempting long-term illness (ALD non exonérante) is no longer enough, on its own, for a journey to be covered. The other grounds still apply: hospital stay, exempting long-term illness, workplace accident, long journeys or series of journeys with prior approval. Children who need prolonged care because of a disability, an incapacity or an accident remain covered. If in doubt, ask your doctor.

Does French health insurance always cover the whole journey?

It may limit reimbursement to the distance to the nearest suitable facility from your home. If in doubt, check with your health insurance fund before the journey.

Do I need prior approval for a long journey?

Yes, in two cases in particular: a journey of more than 150 km, such as to Toulouse, or a series of at least 4 journeys of more than 50 km within 2 months for the same treatment, such as sessions in Montpellier, Carcassonne or Perpignan. Your doctor sends the request to your health insurance fund before the journey; with no reply within 15 days, approval is granted.

Do you handle regular sessions (dialysis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy)?

Yes, we organise the journeys with you for the whole treatment, at the times of your sessions.

Do you pick me up in Greater Narbonne?

Yes. For your medical journeys, we pick you up at home, on booking, in Narbonne and Greater Narbonne.

Can someone come with me?

In some cases (a minor, a dependent person), a companion can travel with you. Let us know when you book.

I'm not covered – can I still book?

Yes, the journey is then paid as a regular taxi ride, at the price given before departure.
